Short Film Round-up: January

Hello readers! I know it's been awhile but I have finally come back to introduce to you a new segment on my blog: Short Film Round-up! It will be a monthly segment that I have created to help share to you all the short films I have been loving for each month. The short films don't have to be created during the given month but these are the ones I have found myself rewatching due to my unexplainable attraction towards them. Hopefully you'll like them as well!

So without further ado, here's a few of the beautiful short films I have been loving for the month of January:

I've been a huge fan of Anna Akana ever since she only had a few videos uploaded on her YouTube channel and when she used to do those comedic sketches that would have me burst into laughter and leave me asking for more. I guess you could say I've been a subscriber for quite some time. When she decided to work on uploading more quality content and create her own short films, I became thrilled. I knew I loved Anna Akana but this just made me love her more. Her creative prowess encompasses some of Hollywood's greatest. No offense. Also, her mantra, "I am still learning." and how she improves her skills through experience inspires me to do more in reaching my dreams rather than waiting for it's front door to open right in front of me.

Afflicted, Inc. - Anna Akana

The creative director at Afflicted, Inc. comes to a decision. The characters are Anorexia Nervosa, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Shame, Panic Disorder, Bipolar Disorder and Perfectionism.

Although it was only 4 minutes long, it spoke volumes with the topic of self afflictions and mental illnesses. It is very honest and the symbolism really stuck to me. This film helped me realize how our current society works and I honestly think others should be aware of this. As a side note, the makeup done by Barnyard FX was absolutely amazing and fit right into the tone.

A simple tweet I posted asking the public to recommend me short films/films to watch lead me to discovering the young and talented, Yulin Kuang. Thank you to my friend, Mikee, for the recommendation! With that in order, Yulin Kuang is just the filmmaker I've been looking for. As a fellow geek, a short film filled with references to the things you love is the easy road to my heart. And "I Ship It" takes the cake - or baked the cake to begin with. It's filled with Harry Potter references that are easily distinguishable and catchy songs that were literally part of my playlist for a whole month!

I Ship It - Yulin Kuang

After a bad breakup, Zoe Smallman decides to take down her ex-boyfriend in a wizard rock battle of the bands. Damn you Peter Hackett!

The main reason I love this film is because it knows it's quirky and fully embraces it. The characters have a YouTuber-esque vibe which I love. Also, I need to get me one of those moral support flags. On the other hand, I honestly wasn't a fan of how the film ended because it was a little too cliché for my taste but I would be a liar to say that I didn't find it cute. I kinda ship it.

You know those days where you would find yourself on YouTube and typing down "Short Film" in the search box? I have a lot of those days. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret the way I spent my time. Without those days, I wouldn't have discovered Michael Evans and his wonderful works.

Post It - Michael Evans

Elroy wants to be left alone, but Clara is too curious about what he carries inside his cardboard box.

It's a unique and quirky short film that left me feeling all giddy. It made me want to leave my house and go out of my way to compliment people and make them smile. It made me feel good about myself and not a lot of films can make me feel like that. It made me a happy-go-lucky camper and I was more than alright with that.
